There are three soda machines from the 1950s, round tops, that are easily the most desired machines for serious collectors. These three, are all VMC 81 models, embossed with Royal Crown, 7 up, and Pepsi and painted accordingly.
Coca Cola Vendo 81s are also in great demand but were made in much larger numbers. RC and 7up 81s unrestored are already more desired than restored units and command a premium (said to be 15 to 20k usd) and the Pepsi version has now arrived. Any machine can be restored. Some have been restored two or three times. BUT none of these great old venders was finished with auto show paint. They were painted to go on location and work. They had a sheen, but it was nothing like a show car. It was NOT basecoat clear coat.
The interiors were not painted at all, let alone painted with powder coat. The crank handles were NOT chromed.
They had natural finishes that look great if you find them before someone sends them off to the chrome shop. And it's important to understand that a machine, once "restored" can never be original/un-restored. It can only be restored AGAIN.
The classic car market has preferred survivor cars (those that have never been restored, sometimes with fairly rough paint, etc) for decades now, and soda machines are now arriving at the same conclusion: People want to see that classic has lived a life. And parts are all essential to this survivor market. This machine is a survivor, and there are MANY more restored Pepsi 81s now than there are survivors. In fact, survivors may make up only 5 or 10 percent of Pepsi 81s.

It is listed on Craigslist in Yorktown, IN. You can find more photos and maybe video links there. Nice old vmc81 Pepsi very hard to find machine.
Complete machine with original paint and decals. Coke decal appears to be from 50s.
There are some spots that have been touched it up. This is a popular and scarce item. It can be enjoyed as is or restored as you like.
I tend to prefer original. I cannot guarantee the cooling system is 100 percent, but I ran it for half an hour which was enough to cool the interior to about 35 degrees. That is without any service. These old units could last a very long time. The wiring is still mostly pliable, and all parts run, including upper and lower fans, compressor, and the thermostat works. The door light also lights as it should. The glass that covers the fluorescent light has been cracked and is repaired but you have to go looking to see it. Touchups can easily be wet sanded off partially or fully, if that's what you like. It is attractive as it is and ready to use.
